It was a race against time to create a design concept for an 8,000 square foot French Country home, in its final stages of being built, on the North Shore. Our clients requested that the interior furnishing be complete by the time they moved in, which would be within the year. They envisioned their family living in this home for years, so a design that could evolve with the growing family was needed. They wanted the home to be elegant, but also practical and welcoming. The décor could not be overly formal since the home would be filled with children for many years. This was the challenge, along with the timeframe, given the size of the home.

The challenge of this interior design project was to provide a kitchen area and adjoining room that was functional for entertaining and allowed for free movement from a dining area into the kitchen. The existing floor plan of this North Shore home, which was laid out in a traditional manner, was incompatible with the client’s lifestyle. The solution was to create a space that provided this client full accessibility to her guests while she was engaged in the kitchen.

A request to have a room completed in just four and one half days can make any designer shudder. The phrase, “This only happens on TV” comes to mind. And typically, such a request could mean turned away business. However, when this particular call came in, there was a caveat…

This 3600 square foot townhouse, located in the North Shore area of the Chicago suburbs, consists of four stories with an elevator. The homeowner, a bachelor, requested a design that could accommodate his entertaining lifestyle, which required an extensive lighting system, sound system, and other technological effects. Showcasing the client’s extensive art collection, as well as working around the existing flooring, were two big challenges of this project. Most critical, however, was the requirement that this design utilize a fast track production schedule so that all work would be completed within nine months.

Collaborate Design Studio was contacted for interior design work for a new home on the North Shore. The priority of the homeowners, however, was the design of their daughter’s bedroom and sitting room. These parents desired a special space for their daughter because she is living with a rare chronic illness – Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). This illness first surfaced when the daughter was in junior high school, and she is now home schooled via the computer system with the high school. Some days are better than others. This illness keeps her from doing the “normal” things that teenagers do, such as shopping or going to the movies.
