This 3600 square foot townhouse, located in the North Shore area of the Chicago suburbs, consists of four stories with an elevator. The homeowner, a bachelor, requested a design that could accommodate his entertaining lifestyle, which required an extensive lighting system, sound system, and other technological effects. Showcasing the client’s extensive art collection, as well as working around the existing flooring, were two big challenges of this project. Most critical, however, was the requirement that this design utilize a fast track production schedule so that all work would be completed within nine months. Upon entering the home, textured striped walls and faux stone pillars set an elegant tone that compliments the custom rug and graceful curved-arm bench. A gilded rope screen with antique glass reflects the grace and comfort of this area and sets the mood for the home. The poker room, which is located directly inside the entry, was designed around an existing poker table and chairs. Mini spot lights installed in a circular pattern illuminate the perimeter of the table. A mix of fabrics, textures, and martini sconces showcase the “martini” theme. Situated off of the entry, the powder room continues with the feel of elegance. Window treatments and lighting combine to instill a feeling of grace and sophistication. A custom carpet runner leads up the formal staircase past the illuminated niches of art. Within the living and dining areas, a sofa with angular and curvilinear lines in earthy browns with blue and brown accent pillows provides ample seating. A custom bar height 60-inch square table is placed so that the television can be viewed past the sofa. A custom entertainment center conceals all of the client’s media and audio equipment. Various layers within the spectacular window treatments allow for complete black out for conversion of the living area into a media room. The intricate lighting and ceiling systems provide various lighting levels for different functional uses in these areas, in addition to highlighting the client’s artwork. The client requested that the master bedroom and bath be romantic. Inspired by the artwork, a color palate of sage green, cobalt, taupe and cream with a mixture of textures were interspersed within the rooms, creating the intended mood. A cream fabric upholstered bed was placed in front of the sage green drapery. Classical motifs found in the chaise, large mirror and fabrics help to enhance the desired ambience. Adjoining the master bedroom, the bath carries on the romantic feel with the spa-like tub surrounded by draping fabric and a custom ceiling mounted candelabra. The custom textures on the wall continue the classical tone. This client envisioned a home that was sophisticated and classy for entertaining clients and friends. The choice of fabrics and furnishings, coupled with various finishes and integrated with the client’s own artwork resulted in an exceptionally elegant home for living and entertaining.
