“Mystical, Magical, Medieval”

Collaborate Design Studio was contacted for interior design work for a new home on the North Shore.  The priority of the homeowners, however, was the design of their daughter’s bedroom and sitting room.  These parents desired a special space for their daughter because she is living with a rare chronic illness – Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).  This illness first surfaced when the daughter was in junior high school, and she is now home schooled via the computer system with the high school.  Some days are better than others.  This illness keeps her from doing the “normal” things that teenagers do, such as shopping or going to the movies.

The inspiration for the room was developed from the girl’s love of “mystical, magical, medieval” as well as her art collection depicting this time period and her extensive book collection.  The room was created using colors that reflected a medieval sense.  Shades of purples and wines were used in the paints, wall coverings, and fabrics.  The ceiling was painted as a midnight navy sky.  Gold accents were used throughout the space and found in the fabrics, accessories, and wall coverings.  White baseboards, trim, and casings helped “pop” the colors of the room, and added to the dramatic effects.  A revolving bookcase in the entry area is home to many of the daughter’s beloved books, in addition to being adorned by a medieval statue and a striking period-style dress. A custom “hidden door” bookcase in between the sleeping area and the sitting area, where the daughter receives her guests, houses more of her books.  Two additional custom bookcases flank a window seat, and display books and accessories.

Luxurious fabrics were used extensively throughout the room, including an impressively draped bed, which was the request of the daughter.  Shimmering gold tone window treatments allow sunlight through the Palladian windows and into the sitting area.  A “fainting” chaise covered in soft textured fabric and a round tufted ottoman in purples and gold greets guests.  Care was taken so that the medieval theme would be found in many of the details of the room, including the shapes of the table legs and the backs of the chairs.  Whimsical accessories and embellished pillows complete the finishing touches.

This room was a wish come true for our client and their daughter.  This teenager’s fantasy room provides her the comfort that she desires.   Regrettably, the mother of this teenager passed away unexpectedly this past May.  It was this special mother’s desire to ensure her daughter’s dream bedroom became a reality.  She was also very passionate about educating the public on Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, and we hope to carry on this wish.
